Something was wrong.
After checking the time on her silver Rolex a third time and seeing that they were now almost an hour late, Naima made the executive decision to cancel the drop and force Stefano to take that loss.
“Make the call,” she ordered Pete, putting her shades on.
“Are you sure?”
Slowly, her head turned in his direction. “What did you say?”
“I’m sorry, Naima. I’ll make the call.”
With one bob of her head, she returned her attention across the street. At the sight of a small gray car pulling up, she lifted her hand to stop him. Looking toward the left, she noticed three black trucks park a few feet behind.
“Shit,” she grumbled, sitting up in her seat and cutting the Lil Baby that was playing down.
Even though she knew her intuition was trying to prepare her for this moment, Naima waited instead of making a hasty decision. She watched as the man and woman got out of the car and looked toward the blacked-out trucks. They were dressed in exactly what Stefano told her they would be wearing.
“They were searched and planted. CBP is with them to seize the drugs and arrest whoever does the pickup.”
“What do we do?”
“Call Snipe. Do not let them walk into the building. Tell him to wait until I’m in my car and turning off the street. Then, you leave.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Quickly yet casually, Naima got out of Pete’s car and walked to hers. She kept her head low, making sure the couple didn’t spot her. Once she was inside, she sent Stefano a text letting him know they needed to meet ASAP. As soon as she turned off the street, shots began to ring out.
All Naima could do was shake her head. This was exactly why she needed to maintain 100 percent control of her operation. She was too good and had been doing this for too long for shit like this to happen. Had Pete gone inside to collect, he would have been arrested. And even though Naima trusted he would maintain his loyalty to Stefano, there was no guarantee he wouldn’t be trailed long enough to lead them to him or Naima anyway.
As much as Naima loved what she did, this was the second sign that it was time for her to retire or relocate. The first? Stefano’s grandson’s release from prison…
